The purpose of the new Internet-based TOEFL test is to evaluate the English proficiency of people whose native tongue is not English. You will be tested in the four main language skill areas of listening, reading, speaking, and writing. Therefore, you will not be specifically tested on your grammar skills. However, grammar is an integral part of language and it would be well worth the effort to study grammatical structures when preparing for the new ibTOEFL. The scores are required for purposes of admission by more than 2400 colleges and universities in the United States and Canada. TOEFL is also used by institutions in other countries where English is the language of instruction. In addition government agencies, scholarship programs, and licensing/certification agencies use TOEFL scores to evaluate English proficiency. The new TOEFL® will take approximately four hours to finish and note taking will be allowed on the new TOEFL® in order to better reflect real-life academic situations.
